Transparency story: From mysterious to transparent personality
During my college years, I was often seen as a mysterious person due to my unpredictable actions. For instance, in 2006, I approached the newly appointed external Director of COEP Technological University to discuss some positive points about two other professor. However, my sudden visit to his office to invite him to a department event, followed by a shift in conversation to discuss professors, raised suspicions about my motives.
In 2012, during my first job after completing my MBA, I made an oversight by not including the department head in my wedding invitation email which was sent on the last day before my leave. I had used a CC list from a some other email where team was in CC and department head was in the "To" section 😔.
In 2018, I received a straightforward piece of feedback from my new manager, ZS. He said, “Vivek, you do a lot of good things, but you don’t loop me into issues when they happen”.
From 2021, I have adopted this approach, I send emails or WhatsApp messages about my ideas as soon as they come and send interim updates to the relevant stakeholders.
Just last week, chairman of my housing society body, of which I am a panel member, told me, “You are a very transparent person. Whatever you have in your mind comes immediately as a WhatsApp message to the committee group!”
Previously, I was afraid that stakeholders would reject my ideas or laugh at my life updates when informed early on. However, I’ve come to realize that nobody gives a damn about my ideas or life updates, so there’s no harm in sharing these updates from the beginning 😁
