Excellence story: How did I excel in my craft?

Back in 1995, when I was in 5th grade, we had craft class for the first time. Our assignment was to create a truck using cardboard as homework (7 days to complete). Initially, like most of my classmates, I attached simple round cardboard cutouts as wheels.

But then I had an idea—I wanted the wheels to actually rotate. So, I reimagined the design and used a metal wire to attach multiple cardboard discs together, allowing the wheels to spin 🚌. I also paid close attention to the truck’s size, shape, and finishing, which gave it a polished and professional appearance.

When my teacher saw the finished truck, he was genuinely impressed 👏👏 . He mentioned it was the first time anyone had created such a functional craft in class. While the praise was encouraging, what I cherished most was the creative journey itself. I was completely immersed in the process—thinking, planning, and refining my design constantly. Everything else faded into the background.

I realized then that to create something truly excellent, you need to be obsessed, continuously thinking and iterating till you run out of ideas to iterate!
