Learning story: How do I learn a new skill - Tableau & Machine Learning?
Back in 2017, Tableau was emerging as a new visualization tool that required minimal coding—quite a shift from tools like Micro Strategy. At the insistence of a colleague, I created my first dashboard, and that marked the beginning of my journey. In 2019, I applied Tableau to a small use case on a project.
Over the next few years, I worked on a few minor projects, but when I joined my current company in 2021, Tableau had become the primary reporting platform. Thanks to those earlier touchpoints, I was able to adopt it quickly and confidently.
Similarly, I took a course in Machine Learning (ML) in 2021. For a while, I didn’t get much hands-on experience—until 2024, when I finally had the chance to revisit it for a data anomaly detection model.
Now, I’m working on a small mainstream ML project. I know it might take me another 2–3 years to feel truly comfortable with it (I tend to learn slowly 🙂), but by then, ML will feel much more familiar thanks to the foundation I’ve already built in these years.
What I’ve learned is this: half the learning begins the moment you take the first step.
