Standout story: From doing different thing to standout to doing same thing differently
During my COEP Technological University days 2004-07 (I am in second row from bottom, extreme left - black T-shirt), I tried to stand out, by doing different things than peers: unique sweat shirts compared to peers, a Moto phone over the popular Nokia phones, and so on. My aim wasn't to show off, but to demonstrate my innovative spirit.
However, when my phone encountered a minor charging point issue, I realized that replacement parts were scarce for such limited edition phones.
Fast forward to 2019, when I was considering a buying a Tata Harrier for its impressive road presence and aesthetics. Fortunately, before finalizing the purchase, we test drove the Maruti Suzuki Brezza AMT and were quite impressed. And it costed 2/3rd of the price of Harrier. I saw savings and my wife saw another small car in the remaining 1/3 savings. And you know who wins in such cases and we bought a smaller car, Celerio. The key advantage was not just getting two cars for the price of one, but also the easy availability of spare parts and the reliability of the Brezza and Celerio, given they are the best-selling cars in their segments.
I applied this lesson to my professional life as well. Instead of doing different things, I repurpose widely available resources for unique applications. For example, over the past two years, we have developed real-time ICs on Tableau for two clients. The clients appreciated it, the leadership was pleased with the cost-effectiveness, and the team members found it convenient as SQL-Tableau are widely used tools, and any modifications didn’t require special skills or extended wait times."
