If you work in ops (operational) consulting, you might relate to the following story. Even a minor error or mistake made on an ops project can come back to haunt you in the future. That’s why it’s essential to have businessrules and standard operating procedures (SOPs) in place to prevent such issues from happening again.

I was inspired by this idea and started applying business rules and SOPs to answer difficult questions posed by my wife. For instance, when she asked me what I was planning to do on the weekend, I used to answer with specific activities like “I am going to farm” or “I am going to sit at home and watch a movie” or “I will do grocery shopping”. However, these answers came back to haunt me in the future.

Therefore, based on my learning, I set up a business rule that this question is a trick question and I should answer as “Let us go out together”.

This Saturday my wife asked, "What are you doing tomorrow"? Spontaneously, I would have answered, "I am going to farm to fix the water pump and then jog on the jungle trail"

Instead I applied the set business rule and told her lets go out and spend time together. And then we went to the farm, fixed the water pump and then jogged on the jungle trail near the farm.

Business rule and SOPs do help in professional as well as personal life!
