Often, we prioritize long-term solutions and dismiss short-term fixes. However, considering our circumstances and available resources, it’s acceptable to opt for a temporary solution that helps us “get through the day” without undue worry about the future.
As one famous quote advises, “Do not be troubled about the future, for it has yet to come. Live in the present, and make it so beautiful that it will be worth remembering.”
I applied this philosophy to my farm, where water scarcity posed a challenge. Due to financial constraints, I couldn’t install expensive electric connections for irrigation. Instead, I resorted to pot irrigation—a short-term solution—which becomes inadequate after the fruit tree plants grow beyond 2 years (their roots grow deeper). All the 250 fruit tree plants grew well on pot irrigation in this hottest summer (the recent photo of my daughter holding the pot lids after the first rains).
Similarly, within our team, we faced an obstacle while building a Tableau dashboard: one metric remained unautomated. I proposed a workaround—calculating the metric in Excel and loading it into the database weekly. Although this approach is temporary, it allows us to deliver the dashboard on time and provides breathing room to find a more permanent solution.
