Networking story: Your network is your net worth!

It's often said that your network is your net worth. Networking is a crucial skill that can unlock numerous opportunities in both your personal and professional life.

However, to do effective networking there are certain principles:

1. You need to attend events

2. Leverage social media,

3. Follow up with your network consistently,

4. Join professional organizations and attend networking workshops.

But there's one place where, even without these usual networking principles, your network endures and likely grows year after year: my B-School, Great Lakes Institute of Management (I believe the same holds true for your alma mater as well). I completed a one-year course there in 2012. Unlike the four years of engineering with ample free time for social events and picnics, this one-year course was intense, leaving little time to connect with batchmates. Additionally, neither I hadn't been in touch with most of them for the past 12 years, nor during our time in college.

Today, during an alumni meet, we reunited, and it didn't feel like I was an outsider for a single moment. It felt like reconnecting with cousins I see often. It felt like home, surrounded by genuine and sincere batchmates who are now in leadership positions across various industries. This is the most valuable network I have, and the same holds true for all my batchmates and other alumni from different years!

Although you are not physically present with us, Uncle Bala, (Prof. Bala V Balachandran, founder of Great Lakes) your legacy lives on in each of us!
