I studied BCG matrix during my B-School in 2011 and from then onwards have used it during most of my job search interviews.

  • Did it benefit me?

I don't know since none of the interviewer said so directly.

  • Did it add value to my interview?

Definitely yes since few interviewers asked to share the deck with them.

  • How much time it takes to prepare this?

First time some two weeks. Then subsequent iterations have required 2-3 days (actual work takes 1/10th of this time but thinking takes the rest of the time).

  • How do I prepare the BCG matrix relevant to the interview?

BCG matrix is primarily based on two matrix: Growth and Market share. Getting this information maybe difficult given the time crunch before the interview. Hence, I go for any two easily available on online metrics like Revenue and Revenue / employee or Technology usage and price / hour (refer attached image for pharma consulting companies)
