Interview story 2 of 3: Prep for your area of interest
In our second mock interview, a B-School student shared his aspiration to move into the Cloud and digital transformation space. While his past experience aligned well with his dream job, his resume wasn't yielding results. Upon closer review, I noticed he described a project as "PO (Purchase Order) migration to online platform" instead of using industry-specific terms like "Cloud-based PO system migration" or "Digital procurement transformation."
To bridge this gap, I suggested he research five prominent companies in his target field, analyzing their offerings and case studies. He compiled this information into a reference Excel sheet, allowing him to incorporate relevant keywords like "Cloud migration" and "Digital transformation" into his resume. This simple shift in terminology effectively conveyed his relevant experience and skills, aligning his resume with his career goals.
This experience highlights the importance of using the right words at the right time to effectively communicate your skills and experience, especially when targeting a specific industry or area of interest.
Saying the right words at the right time matters! P.S. The above reminded me of how Emily responded to Ross's proposal in Friends. Although she also meant "I love you, too" but she said "Thank you"
