Hospital story: Why did I visit the Princeton Hospital?

In 2018, I was in the US for the first time on a business trip and staying in Princeton. Despite traveling to New York and Woodcliff Lake almost every other day, visiting Princeton Hospital was on my agenda for two main reasons.

Firstly, my manager was blessed with baby in Princeton hospital, so I visited the hospital to offer my congratulations. During this visit, I also had the chance to meet another company senior who had come to see my manager.

Secondly, having worked in pharma consulting for three years, I was curious about big hospitals in US. After meeting my manager, I explored different floors of the hospital to understand its layout and various departments.

Did you know there are 6,100 hospitals in the USA, totaling 1 million beds? Of these:

1. 5,000 are community hospitals (85% of all hospitals)

(3,000 non-profit, 1,200 for-profit, 1,000 state or local government hospitals. And 400 are academic hospitals from the 5,000 community hospitals)

2. 200 federal government-owned hospitals

3. 650 non-federal psychiatric hospitals

4. 120 other types of hospitals

Community hospitals treat a higher volume of patients and focus more on efficiency, while academic medical centers are primary sites for graduate medical education and cutting-edge research, often affiliated with medical schools. Princeton Hospital, part of Penn Medicine, is a non-profit academic medical center.

During my visit to Princeton Hospital, I experienced travel, personal connections, professional meetings, and learning all in one place! What was your similar experience?
