Hospital story: I am breaking down Integrated Delivery Networks (IDNs) for you!
I first encountered the term "affiliation" in 2016, understanding it in the context of HCP-HCO relationships. However, did you know that HCOs are further affiliated with HCO owners, who are in turn part of an IDN? 🤔
IDNs play a crucial role in value-based reimbursement, as opposed to fee-for-service models. An IDN owns and operates a network of hospitals, physician groups, health clinics, ambulatory surgery centers, diagnostics, and imaging centers, all integrated by technology.
Similar to accountable care organizations (ACOs), IDNs utilize their extensive networks of healthcare providers to deliver high-quality, coordinated care to patients. They can meet nearly all of their patients' needs without requiring out-of-network referrals. IDNs leverage their market influence for greater negotiating power with biopharma companies, much like group purchasing organizations (GPOs). They partner with biopharma in areas such as care efficiency, real-world evidence, patient management, and reimbursement support solutions.
A. IDNs in US
> There are 1,100 IDNs in the US, serving 90% of the population and handling 40% to 70% of healthcare claims.
> Texas state has the highest number of IDN headquarters (103), followed by California (90), New York (57), Florida (54), and Tennessee (52).
B. Example of an IDN:
> IDN: HCA Healthcare, Nashville comprised of 186 hospitals and approximately 2,400 sites of care in 20 states with 16 divisions (HCO owner) across US.
> HCO Owner: From these 16 divisions, let's take example of HCA East Florida Division, located in Fort Lauderdale, oversees 14 local hospitals.
> HCO: Hospitals under HCA East Florida are HCA Florida Aventura, Highlands, JFK, JFK North, Kendall, Lawnwood, Mercy, Northwest, Palms West, Plantation emergency Westside, Raulerson, St Lucie, Westside, Woodmont.
> HCP: From these hospitals, let's take example of HCA Florida Aventura which has 60+ HCPs affiliated. 🧑⚕️ 🧑⚕️ 🧑⚕️ 🧑⚕️
