In 2013, I learned to drive a car in India, and within a year, I became a proficient driver (not because I am fast learner but having previously ridden a two-wheeler bike for long distances from 2001)
In 2014, during a week-long visit to New Zealand with seniors from KPIT, I had the opportunity to drive a rented car. However, my lack of confidence in handling a right-hand drive vehicle held me back.
In 2018, I travelled to the US for a three-week office assignment with ZS. Despite my intention to rent a self-drive car, I procrastinated.
Then, in 2020, during another two-week visit to the US with PharmaACE, I resolved to overcome the hesitation. Coincidentally, there was a client meeting where Uber fares were 3x higher than renting a car for a day.
I booked a small car from Enterprise in advance, aiming for easy maneuverability. When I arrived to pick it up, the office attendant upgraded me to an SUV class since small car was not available (bad for me). The rental agency was located near at interstate highway (worst for me). As I sat in the car, the attendant cheerfully wished me an enjoyable trip (felt like she is mocking me). Little did she know that I am contemplated canceling.
However, fueled by ego and armed with comprehensive insurance coverage (for both the car and myself), I decided to take the plunge. I drove attentively, adhering to all rules and tips I’d learned from previous visits. The result? A successful trip, incident-free, and a jubilant feeling upon returning the car the next day.
Likewise, your expertise (driving in India) can be extended to complimentary field (driving in US) with lot of prep work and some courage!
