Designation story: Senior Manager, not Director!
In October 2020, I was negotiating hard with EVERSANA to secure a Director position. With nearly 13 years of experience, including 5 years in pharma consulting primarily at ZS, I felt qualified. Salary negotiations with HR had already concluded (I asked for more money, and HR flatly said no! 😀 End of discussion). I was pushing for a Director title at the same package.
When the discussion reached an impasse, my future manager called. He explained simply that he saw great potential in me to become a Director, but suggested starting as a Senior Manager to allow time to settle in, given the high expectations at the Director level.
Within a year, based on my performance, I was promoted to Associate Director, and two years later, I became a Director.
Now, six months into my role as Director, I’m grateful for the three years I had to adjust to the expectations of the position. This is where below quote is so fitting:
General Manekshaw to the Prime Minister in April 1971: “If you want to start a war, we can do it tomorrow. But if you want to win the war, give me six months.”
