City story: Do busy people have time to help?

hashtag#Mumbai is a city where every minute counts, with local train schedules down to the minute (e.g., the 8:02 am local to CSTM). Despite the fast-paced lifestyle, people still find time to help others.

Last week, I visited Mumbai for shopping and sightseeing. After enjoying a sunset at Marine Drive, we decided to head to CSTM to catch a local train. It was 7 pm on a Friday evening, and we couldn’t find a taxi to CSTM. We waited at a bus stop opposite Mantralaya, but even after 15 minutes, no bus or empty taxi appeared, which is unusual for South Mumbai.

Recalling the phrase from the D-Day landing at Omaha Beach, “Where to go - anywhere but here,” we started walking around, still unable to find a taxi.

A kind Mumbaikar lady noticed us and asked where we were headed. We explained our situation, and she suggested we walk for 5 minutes to another bus stop where there would be plenty of buses and taxis for CSTM. South Mumbai is well-planned, with multiple roads very nearby each other leading to CSTM.

Following her advice, we quickly found a taxi and reached CSTM (attached photo of my wife and daughter). Mumbaikars, who meticulously plan their travel and cover long distances, still take a moment to help others. The lady who assisted us took one minute of her time to help, even though we hadn’t asked for it. This shows that you don’t need to be free to help; you just need the attitude to help. And this attitude is what sets Mumbai apart!
