Bathroom story: Why does the bathroom smell?
Half a year ago, I was explaining to my wife how I was developing a data analytics model to predict the next patient for therapy and suggest the best next action to the client.
She sarcastically suggested, “Why don’t you predict the reason for the smell in our new house’s bathroom and then take action to fix it?”
So, I approached the building engineer and tried various solutions, from changing the pipes to checking for leaks to replacing the commode. However, the issue persisted. After the expert engineer and plumber had exhausted all possible options, I decided to research online.
After watching a couple of videos, it became clear that the water trap in the commode (refer image) was flushing itself out to suck air. Ideally, there should be an open pipe on the terrace to allow air in. When I showed this video to the engineer, he checked the mouth of the pipe on terrace and found a cement bag blocking it. Once the bag was removed, the problem was resolved not only in our flat but also in the 11 other flats sharing the same line.
If you encounter a problem outside your domain and even the experts can’t resolve it, try eliminating one reason at a time. Once the cause of the problem is identified, finding a solution is just a click away (and a kick away from your wife) 😀 !
