Reporting story: Does tool matter in Business intelligence (BI) reporting?

After completing my MBA at the Great Lakes Institute of Management, I I embarked on my marketing career in 2012. Initially, I relied solely on PowerPoint as my business intelligence (BI) tool for the next four years. However, my journey took an interesting turn when I joined ZS in 2015-16 and became acquainted  with Strategy—a tool that, while resource-intensive, provided valuable insights. In 2018, I explored Tableau and was pleasantly surprised by its user-friendly interface, robust data analytics capabilities, and powerful visualization features.

Subsequently, in 2020, PharmaACE, I experimented with QlikSense, which, although slightly less feature-rich than Tableau, offered a different approach to data analysis and visualization.

From 2021-24, I continue to rely on Tableau extensively. However, I encounter a significant limitation: searching for data and insight generation insights.

Enter ThoughtSpot (or other vendor tools like Domo or Sisense)- a game-changer. It leverages value search-driven analytics, AI-driven insights, and extensibility. It utilizes NLP for more advanced natural language querying, making it easier for users to articulate complex questions.

Other notable BI tools, include:

>Domo: Includes predictive analysis powered with Mr. Roboto, their AI engine)

>Sisense: Sisense is a user-friendly data analytics and business intelligence tool that allows anyone within your organisation to manage large and complex datasets as well as analyse and visualise this data.

>PowerBI: Almost same as Tableau but more Microsoft based integration options available

>Looker - Google data studio: Google Data Studio is a free, web-based business intelligence tool that enables users to create interactive and customizable dashboards and reports.

>IBMcognos: Although AI based BI platform, it is not developer or admin friendly

>SAS: While SAS’ most popular offering is its advanced predictive analytics, it also provides a great business intelligence platform.

>SAP Analytics Cloud: SaaS-Platform) for SAP's BI
