Interview story: Play on the front foot!
During a resume update session for a B-School graduate with prior IT experience, the candidate set his sights on a tech consulting role. Despite making it to the second round of interviews with five relevant companies, he faced rejection.
Upon closer examination, it became apparent that he had been passively waiting for the interviewer to ask into tech consulting topics. However, the interviewers primarily stuck to basic questions related to his resume and B-School subjects.
As a constructive next step, I advised him to take a proactive approach. He needed to thoroughly research the company he was applying to, understand their offerings and ongoing projects, and then align his past experience with their needs. Additionally, I recommended preparing 3-4 slides on the competitive landscape, market size, and gaps in the company’s offerings. This way, he would be on the front foot during interviews, ensuring a focused discussion around his area of interest: tech consulting.
Remember, preparation and strategic thinking can make all the difference in interview success!
