Communication story: What do you need from me?
In 2014, I completed 2.7 years at KPIT without a promotion, although I had performed well. And in a typical stereotype way, my department head acknowledged my efforts, but only after I resigned.
I had an offer from a market research report publishing company, but I was hesitant to join due to the role's nature. So, I approached my old department head and informed him of my resignation. When he asked "why", I launched into a 20-minute emotional monologue about the department's issues and my lack of recognition. He patiently listened and then asked the million-dollar question, "Vivek, what do you need from me?"
I then asked if he could recommend me to other teams.
I'm sure he thought, "You took 20 minutes to say this?"
In no time, he provided me with three internal leads, of which two managers were ready to take me into their teams.
In hindsight, I should have spent one minute explaining why I wanted to move and another two minutes discussing my skills and expertise, then asked if he could recommend me to other teams.
It's better to keep emotions out when you need to achieve something concrete from a discussion.
To vent your emotional frustrations, you can always talk to a friend or a counselor!
