Affiliation story: HCP to HCO affiliations which address to use: HCP address or HCP affiliation address?
Health care professionals (HCPs) are the foundation for creating a target list for any specialty drug (e.g., Oncology, Neurology) to be promoted. Reps need the address of the HCPs to make a call on the target HCP. The question is, which address should be used—the HCP's practice address or the affiliated organization's address from sources like Definitive Healthcare or Veeva Systems?
In 2012, I would have recommended using the HCP's practice address, as 70% of HCPs had private practices. Fast forward to 2024, and this percentage has dropped to less than 20%. Nearly 80% of physicians now work for hospitals or other corporate entities as private practices have dwindled.
Therefore, in 2024, it makes sense to use the primary affiliation address (i.e. address of the HCO where HCP is affiliated), also known as the primary location zip. This is logical since most HCPs are practicing within their affiliated organizations. In one call, a rep is likely to meet more than one HCP at the organization, unlike using the primary address, where the HCP might have had private practice in the past.
Just make sure to highlight that you have used the HCP's primary affiliation address and not their primary practice address!
