Product story: "I don't have a problem with too many cooks; I have a problem when each of these cooks want to be chefs!"

Recently, I caught up with one of my ex-senior, a BU managing partner, with whom I had some overlap at one of the companies. I mentioned the leadership working style of that company. As part of an internal initiative, I was the PMO for the Integrated Analytical Services offering. This was a company-wide new offering being developed, involving all the senior partners. However, the biggest issue I observed was its bottom-up approach. Each partner contributed based on their strengths, shaping the offering from their perspective, which missed addressing the actual market needs.

When I shared this with the BU managing partner, he summed it up with a single line: "I have no problem having too many cooks. I can manage them. But I have a problem when all these cooks want to be the chef!"

This means that while it's fine to have many stakeholders providing input for an offering or product, the issue arises when these stakeholders want to take the lead. In such cases, the offering or product ends up reflecting each stakeholder's requirements rather than solving the market problem.
