Patient is an individual on therapy for a disease he/she is suffering.
NBRx is New Patient Start on a new drug. Sales reps feel they have more influence on NBRx in comparison to TRx, which they perceive as being more dependent on ongoing patient compliance.
NRx includes any new prescription: new-to-brand, new script, renewal of expired scripts. NRx remains a popular proxy for patient-oriented metrics. However, if it is used as Incentive Compensation (IC) metric, it may encourage the reps to influence HCPs to write shorter duration scripts, so they can get higher NRx volume.
What the above means is that 1 patient can have multiple NBRx and each NBRx can have multiple NRx.
NRx and TRx combinations are better metrics for IC.
Example of Patient, NBRx and NRx: Patient A is suffering from NSCLC (type of lung cancer).
Physician puts this patient on Cisplatin (chemo therapy) for three months - First NBRx and also termed as NRx.
Now after three months of Cisplatin therapy, physician writes Cisplatin for two more months. This would be termed as another NRx
After Cisplatin, Physician switches the patient A to Opdivo (Immuno-oncology) for a month which would be termed as another NBRx as well as NRx
Basically, there is 1 Patient A, 2 NBRx (Cisplatin & Opdivo) and 3 NRx (2 from Cisplatin and 1 Opdivo)
(and 12 TRx, assuming Cisplatin as well as Opdivo are given every 15 days: 3 months + 2 months on Cisplatin and 1 month on Opdivo = 6 months * 2 TRx = 12 TRx)
