Communication story: From Weak Listener to Good Listener
In 2007, I received two job offers after graduating from COEP Technological University. One was from ITC Limited, offering a package of Rs 4.5 lakh per annum with a start date in early June. I was the only student from my batch to be selected. The other offer was from Larsen & Toubro (L&T), with a package of Rs 2.75 lakh per annum and a mid-July start date, along with several other students.
Along with higher package, the exclusivity of the ITC offer attracted me. However, my uncle advised against it, pointing out that I would be working in cigarette manufacturing. Recognizing that I was firm in my decision, he suggested I meet with a respected veteran. Despite my reluctance, the veteran explained that ITC would offer limited factory exposure, while L&T would provide global exposure.
I joined ITC but left within a month to join L&T, thanks to the advice from my uncle & the industry veteran (though it took me a month to come around to their perspective)
This experience taught me the importance of listening openly and considering all viewpoints. Today, I actively seek advice from colleagues, seniors, and mentors, listening intently to their perspectives. While I may not agree immediately during the meeting, I reflect on their advice later in the day, which aids in better decision-making.
Key Takeaway: Rumination is crucial. Absorb information as it comes, and later, in your free time, reprocess and rethink it.
